THE CAVE OF A THOUSAND DEATHS

The feel of cold steel on my skin and the heat of blood gushing from my neck...

I didn’t know how long this went on. Minutes? Hours? Years? Centuries? First, time stopped mattering. Then the pain. All that remained was the unyielding desire to take my enemy with me, into the depths of this horrible hell...

Death followed me every moment. My opponents were much stronger than I was. I died again and again, each time trying to sell my life for more power. My consciousness dissolved in an endless series of deaths and my instincts came to the fore. With them came my other side, the side that had been hidden in the shadows for so long — ruthlessness.

There were no rules when it came to acquiring power.

I finally understood why those words were so deeply embedded in my soul.

It was my willpower and my ruthlessness toward myself that made me what I was — an undisputed champion. They kept me from surrendering in the past and would keep me from doing so in the future. Fighting for the sake of fighting was my high. Some would say I was crazy. Probably, but people didn’t become champions by being mellow. Only those willing to devote themselves to the true art of combat could achieve greatness. To put your life and health on the line every time to prove that you were the best of the best.

I smiled at the thought.

“Lady Zhan, I have come to know your perfection. I swear by all the Lords of Hell that I’ll make it out of here.”

I wouldn’t give up in this damned place. A place where there was no faith, no hope, only endless pain and death that took on countless forms. A place that changed with each rebirth.

I died on mountaintops and in deep caves. I fought on islands in the middle of lava and deep underwater. My life was cut short in deserts and ancient temples.

Somewhere deep inside, I felt that if I fell to my knees and begged for mercy, it’d all be over. Myself included. I’d cease to be me. To me, there was nothing worse than giving up.

With each new battle, I understood myself better.

Every new death gave me invaluable experience.

Every new place taught me to feel the world around me.

Every enemy was a teacher...

Centuries later, I was no longer a helpless prey. My hunters now bore my teeth marks. Pain became an unpleasant convention. I learned to fight with broken limbs and mortal wounds, the mere sight of which would have horrified me before.
